The West Orange K-12 Public School District has been educating students since 1895 when the Washington School first opened its doors. Today, there are eleven schools in the West Orange Public School system with the newest being Liberty Middle School, which opened in December, 2005.

Located throughout West Orange, the seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one comprehensive high school do an outstanding job of educating the 6,200 plus student body. Some of these accomplishments are listed on the West Orange Public Schools’ Highlights handout.

Based originally on a neighborhood school system, the current districting has evolved to provide a stronger, more balanced environment for all the children. Most notable of the West Orange Board of Education’s efforts toward offering educational excellence, is the concept of a Central 6th middle school. The Board of Education, being in the forefront of educational practices and assisted with input from the community and educators, determined that the best way to ensure a smooth transition from elementary to middle school would be to have all the sixth grade students in the district attend the same school. The desired results of the Central 6th being an easier to transition to learning how to change classes, adapting to the higher expectations of middle school teachers, not having to worry about competing with older students, and most importantly, how to become mature, responsible middle school students. To date, this practice is proving to be exemplary.

Realizing that all children have different learning styles and abilities, all students in the West Orange Public Schools - through the efforts of a highly dedicated teaching staff - receive the same high quality education regardless of the school they attend. The West Orange Board of Education fully supports these different learning styles and abilities and is committed to implementing programs that help each individual child realize their full potential and area of giftedness - whether that be academics, the arts, athletics, or a combination of these.

We are delighted that you are interested in the town of West Orange and the Public Schools, West Orange; and, we will gladly assist you further with any questions that you may have in regards to the educational value we offer.
