LIBRARY LINKS

The links below will direct you to Library Media Centers located in each of the schools in the West Orange School District.  On the school LMC Web sites, you will find links to our online resources that are available 24/7 for our students.  Please take time to visit our schools' Library Media Center Web sites and learn more about our offerings.

 Library Media Resources

Library Media Specialists encourage students to read, view, and listen to a variety of sources for informational, recreational, and educational purposes.

Library resources include books, periodicals, DVDs, audio cassettes, videotapes, reference materials, and computer workstations that provide high speed access to the Internet and online databases, thereby extending the physical collection of resources.  Mandarin, our district's network-based circulation software, allows all classrooms access to OPAC, our Online Public Access Catalog.

 Elementary Library Media Program

The PreK Library Media Center program prepares preschool students for periodic visits to the LMC and for subsequent successful participation in the K-5 LMC program.  The Library Media Specialist selects  books of differentiated reading levels and interests that meet preschool and LMC curricula and rotates them among the classes. Students participate in shared reading experiences with emphasis on student interaction, lively reading experiences involving music, movement, manipulatives and puppets, and hands-on follow-up activities.

All students in grades K-5 are scheduled to visit the Library Media Center once each week in order to receive instruction in lessons that emphasize the appreciation of literary genres, award-winning literature, authors and illustrators, understanding of the library environment, community and multiculturalism, and information and media literacy. Our elementary Library Media Centers provide both formal and informal opportunities for children to enjoy books and reading, borrow materials for their personal use, practice research skills, and become independent lifelong users of libraries.  Library Media Benchmarks Grades K-5

 Middle School Library Media Program

The Library Media Centers at the middle school level build upon the skills and knowledge taught in grades K-5.  This program is designed to meet students' personal and curricular needs in grades 6-8 and to prepare them for the demands of grades 9-12.

Students in grades 6-8 do not have a regularly scheduled library period as they did in elementary school.  In the 6th grade, students come to the Library Media Center with their teachers for a series of orientation visits and formal instruction in the use of the automated catalog, basic reference tools, cyber safety, and electronic resources.  The library media specialist and the classroom teacher work collaboratively to provide students with opportunities to explore a variety of electronic, print, and non-print media that support the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.  Any subject area teacher may schedule subsequent visits for additional instruction, review, or research projects on an as-needed basis at any time.  In addition, individual and small group instruction and assistance are provided throughout the school year.  The library media specialist also works cooperatively with classroom teachers to stimulate reading motivation by means of a variety of projects and activities.

In the 7th and 8th grades, advanced reference tools, Web site evaluation, and research techniques are stressed.  Practical application is instituted across the curriculum by means of research projects. This is accomplished through class, small group, and individual instruction.  All middle school LMCs have 30 student computer workstations. Cyber safety areas of intellectual property, copyright, and plagiarism are addressed. In addition, methods of promoting students' appreciation, evaluation, and interpretation of various forms of literature continue to be implemented throughout the school year.

 High School Library Media Program

A well-run, student-centered school library media program that is carefully planned, appropriately staffed, and imaginatively and efficiently managed is essential for meeting contemporary  learning needs.  Such a program with administrative support makes a significant contribution to student learning.  (AASL & NAECT, 1998).

Our high school Library Media Center (LMC) “…has a responsibility to support the school’s curriculum and to provide materials that serve the diverse backgrounds, interests, maturity levels and reading levels of the entire student body.” (Coping with Challenges Kids and Libraries: What You Should Know; http://www.ala.org)  The LMC at West Orange High school plays an active role in the school's educational program and functions as an integral part of the total education process.  The library media program continues to recognize the uniquemenss of the individual learner, the complexity of the learning process, and the 21st century technology skills that extend traditional materials to meet the needs of our students who are growing up in the world of today in order to be prepared for the world of tomorrow.  High School Library Media Benchmarks
