Welcome to Thomas A Edison Central Six Middle School website.
My name is Xavier M. Fitzgerald and I am the Principal of this wonderful school. Edison Central Six is an effective middle school which meets the needs of the young adolescent learner. Our curricular program provides flexibility to address the transitional needs of our students through a nurturing yet challenging learning environment.
Our goal is to create a positive learning community that seeks to maximize the academic abilities and the social and emotional development of all students in order to produce life long learners. We seek to carry out this goal through small learning communities. These small learning communities combine effective leadership, successful collaboration, quality core values, parent and community involvement, authentic curriculum, instruction, assessment, respectful appreciation for diversity, meaningful professional development, and a positive school climate and culture.
Students are assigned to one of four academic teams. These interdisciplinary teams are comprised of faculty who teach Integrated Reading , Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education/ Health and World Language (Spanish). The students are also scheduled for related arts courses which are Art, General Music, Keyboarding, Writing Process, and Math Enrichment. Students will also have elective music courses including Band, Orchestra, and Chorus on an alternating even-odd schedule. Students participate in a daily advisory period that incorporates four major themes:

Problem Solving and Decision-Making.
The teams of teachers have a daily collaborative planning periods in which they can carefully consider the needs of their students. This enables the teachers to work together to achieve a common goal – providing the best possible learning experience for students. Teachers and counselors communicate directly with parents to advise them of their child’s progress in school and if necessary design a support and intervention strategy to achieve success for all students.
Thomas A. Edison Central Six strives to meet the instructional needs of all students. We follow the district initiative of Differentiated Instruction. E.M.S. also provides Inclusion Classes, Resources Classes and Departmentlized Classes for our Special Education students We also provide a wide range of course offerings, which include HAP (High Aptitude Program), ESL, Top Reading, and Top Math for those students who meet the criteria.
At Edison Middle School, we understand that we cannot accomplish the duty of educating all students by ourselves. When we work together in partnership, we can all be successful. We are only limited by that which we refuse to try as we continue to configure the Central Six model and increase the number of committed people to our goal. Together, we will build a more powerful school, which will produce stronger academically and socially prepared students.
