MARCHING TOWARDS SPRING!!
During the month of March, the first grade will be studying Read Across America and Dr. Suess, St. Patrick's Day, spring, and Women's History Month. Please take note of the packets that were sent home for the procedure for the project. Projects are due no later than Wednesday, March 17th. Please look below for websites you can use at home to help reinforce skills learned in school.
As we are focusing on comprehension skills, here are some suggested questions that you can ask your child before, during, and after reading of mini books and library books:
1. Who are the main characters in the story (who is the story about)?
2. Where does the story take place?
3. When is the story taking place
4. What is the problem?
5. What is the solution?
6. How did you feel about the story?
7. Does the story remind you of any other stories or anything that has happened to you?
High frequency words need to be memorized. The best way is to practice reading and playing games with your children. Although some of the words can be sounded out, it is best to work at recognizing the words by sight.
Written homework is given every night Monday through Thursday. Homework in first grade is primarily about developing responsiblity in our children. They are responsible to bring home the assignments and needs to be completed every night. If it is not, it will be reflective upon their report card. Please make sure to check your child's homework folder and agenda book daily for completed papers and notices. Homework folders and agenda books should be returned to school every day.
In addition to written homework, your child should practice reading every night. Your child may practice reading from their reading folder, mini books, and library books. Don't forget to fill out your reading logs!
Please be reminded that it is important to supply your child with a healthy snack every day.
